Amp choice and live room

Rehearsal space in Amsterdam is tight and loud leaks fast. In our live room you balance amps, drum iso and room mics — the core of Band and ensemble recording.

Room facts

Miekpixel has 3 rooms; the live room is about 38 m² with a glass drum iso. We can track up to 5 musicians at once with 32 mic inputs for multitrack — enough for a typical rock or indie setup with overheads, room mics and direct lines.

The control room sits beside the live room; talkback lets you hear what we hear. Directions and parking: contact and Wibautstraat 224 is in Amsterdam Oost. Metro stations Wibautstraat (M52/M53) and Amstel are within walking distance. Trams 1 and 7 run along Wibautstraat; get off at Wibautstraat stop. Bike racks are in front of the entrance; on-street car parking is limited..

Bring your amp or use backline

Many bands haul combos across Amsterdam Oost. Your amp is welcome; share wattage and cab size when booking so we prep DI and cab mics. Backline is available — ask what is free that week because maintenance rotates.

Tube amps need warm-up: arrive early enough to settle bias without burning session time. Solid-state combos stabilise faster. For quiet morning sessions, consider an attenuator or smaller cab; we blend sm57/dynamic capture that still mixes later.

  • Share home mic positions — we can approximate, not clone.
  • Fresh strings and sticks help; the iso kit is ours, your snare is fine.
  • Tune before load-in; tuners are here but queues cost minutes.

Volume and city reality

Amsterdam studios work under strict noise limits. We watch SPL and stage gain so the drum iso does not swamp the room. Screaming 100W stacks are rarely needed; a close mic captures more detail than brute level.

If you are used to a rehearsal bunker without iso, expect clearer bleed and visible meters — that helps one honest live take, not a penalty.

Drums and iso

Drums sit in ventilated glass; overheads and room mics live outside. Bass and guitar play in the live room with amp isolation where needed. Decide who tracks live with drums and who overdubs — band overdub blocks are €195 for three hours.

Plan snare or kick replacement in mix? Always capture bass DI and a dry guitar safety. Read stem delivery if you continue at home.

Time and rates

Band tracking is €125 per hour or €920 for an eight-hour studio day (21% VAT included). Half-day vocals in the booth use Vocal and spoken-word recording rates — do not mix pages when quoting.

35% deposit, free cancel until 4 days out. Book via contact; we reply within 2 business days. B2B: 21 day terms possible.

Cues and click

We send click or guide to headphones; say if you prefer a visual metronome. Bassists on amp monitoring get their own mix; singers in the room hear a different cue than the drummer in iso.

Bring your IEM rig charged and coordinated — wireless guitar systems can clash in dense urban RF. We help separate frequencies.

Rehearsal at home

A tiny rehearsal box feels nothing like 38 m² with room tone. Practice dynamics: where to pull back so choruses still hit? Note tempo and key; email a demo mp3 to [email protected] ahead of time.

Vocalists: see studio day checklist. Guitarists: intonate across the neck, not only open chords.

After tracking: mix and master

Raw multitrack stays 14 months on our side. For Mixing and editing budget €190 per track or bundles up to €1,320 for twelve tracks — always with 2 revision rounds included. Master via Mastering and delivery; loudness notes in loudness guide.
